Marine Survey
A professional inspection of a vessel's hull, systems, and equipment performed by a qualified marine surveyor.
A marine survey is a professional, third-party inspection of a vessel used to evaluate its condition, market value, and seaworthiness. Surveys are performed by qualified marine surveyors — typically accredited by SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors).
The three common survey types are: - Condition & Value — full inspection plus a written valuation. Required by most lenders and insurers. - Pre-Purchase — the most thorough; includes a haul-out, sea trial, and a written list of deficiencies. - Insurance Renewal — typically required every 5-10 years to keep a commercial policy in force.
For a charter vessel, a recent condition survey is effectively a prerequisite for getting — or renewing — a commercial insurance policy.
Examples
- A buyer hires a SAMS-accredited surveyor to perform a pre-purchase survey on a 50-foot yacht before closing.
- An insurer requires a fresh condition survey every five years for a charter vessel over 20 years old.
