Masters License
A tiered USCG license authorizing a captain to operate an inspected passenger vessel, sized by vessel tonnage.
A Master's license is the class of USCG credentials that authorizes the holder to command inspected passenger vessels. Tonnage tiers include 25-ton, 50-ton, 100-ton, 200-ton, and 500-ton Master. Each tier requires progressively more documented sea time, additional endorsements, and more exam modules.
A Master can carry more than six paying passengers, which is the hard cap under an OUPV. With an appropriate tonnage and a valid vessel COI, a 100-ton Master could run a 49-passenger day-charter yacht in coastal waters, for example.
Masters who work offshore or on vessels over 200 gross tons typically also hold STCW certification — an international standard for seafarers — plus specific endorsements like Towing, Sail, or Master of Uninspected Towing Vessels.
Examples
- A 100-ton Master running a 45-passenger party yacht in Biscayne Bay.
- A 500-ton Master running a 120-foot inspected passenger vessel for corporate events.
