Slip
An assigned docking space at a marina, rented by the month, season, or year.
A slip is a single assigned docking space at a marina — the water space between the fingers of a dock where a boat ties up. Slips are rented on a monthly, annual, or multi-year basis; prices depend on slip length, beam, location within the marina, shore-power amperage, and whether the marina is in a high-demand destination.
Slip dimensions are usually specified as "length x width" and must match or exceed the vessel's LOA and beam. Most marinas charge by LOA (not hull length), so a vessel with a long bowsprit or swim platform pays for the larger footprint.
In South Florida, prime-season slips in Miami Beach or Fort Lauderdale command $35-80+ per foot per month. Outside peak season, and at less-central marinas, rates drop substantially.
Examples
- A 50-foot yacht renting a 55-foot slip at a Miami Beach marina for $2,500/month.
- A catamaran needing a 24-foot-wide slip pays a premium vs. a 45-foot-long monohull in the same marina.
