Center Console

A powerboat design with a single open cockpit and the helm in a console at the center of the boat.

A center console is a powerboat design with the helm, controls, and electronics mounted in a console at the center of the boat, surrounded by an open cockpit. Center consoles are the dominant design for inshore fishing, sport fishing, day charters, and tender use because the open layout allows 360-degree fishing access and easy passenger movement.

Modern center consoles range from 18-foot bay boats to 50-foot-plus triple- and quad-outboard powerhouses. Larger center consoles often include forward cabins (for heads and a berth) while preserving the open cockpit layout aft.

For charters, center consoles are the workhorse of Miami day trips — they carry six passengers easily, handle rough offshore conditions well, and are fuel-efficient relative to similarly sized sportfish yachts.

Examples

  • A 36-foot triple-engine center console running Miami sandbar and beach trips.
  • A 28-foot bay boat used for inshore fishing and flats charters.
