Motor Yacht
A yacht propelled by engine, typically purpose-built for comfort, speed, and amenities rather than sailing performance.
A motor yacht (sometimes "power yacht") is a yacht whose primary means of propulsion is its engines — typically twin diesels, though larger yachts may carry three or four. Motor yachts span from 30-foot cruisers to 500-foot superyachts and include cruisers, express yachts, sport yachts, and motor-yacht-trawlers.
Compared to sailing yachts, motor yachts are faster, less weather-dependent, and usually have more interior volume per foot. They are the default charter format in South Florida day-charter markets because the schedule is predictable and passengers don't need sailing experience or tolerance for heel.
Fuel burn is the chief operational cost: a 50-foot motor yacht at cruise can burn 30-40 gallons per hour, so fuel is typically billed as a pass-through on captained charters.
Examples
- A 65-foot motor yacht running Miami day charters with twin 1,150 hp diesels.
- A 120-foot tri-deck motor yacht chartered for the Art Basel week as a floating hospitality suite.
